My mentor, Ms. Silva-Flores, actually took a somewhat different path when it came to her college education. She went to Mesa, City College, SDSU and National University. She originally was planning on majoring in psychology (just like me!) but after taking some of the classes and doing some work in a kindergarten classroom, she felt inspired by her own kindergarten teacher and decided to pursue a different path in life. I of course found that very interesting because of right now I plan on going into the field of psychology but she is proof that that could very well change! The one thing that this externship has solidified for me is that whether I stay on the path that I am on right now or end up changing, I definitely want to work with kids. I especially love the younger ones around this age, but I honestly love kids overall.
The site that I work at is really great because everyone is so friendly and nice to each other. All the staff know each other well and have both professional and personal relationships. They know when to be serious as well as when they can discuss the less work related topics. It's interesting to see how the teachers interact with each other and how their demeanor changes when they are around each other without the students. I've really learned the importance of finding "your people" at the place you work who you feel will have your back if you get into a sticky situation or need to vent. I think that because I've had the privilege of building such a close relationship with my mentor it has allowed me to get more of an inside perspective and see learn how to manage both types of interactions.
